Chocolate frappe bombe gift set with serving of frappe in a glass with whipped cream and chocolate sauce

WHAT IS A CHOCOLATE FRAPPE MADE OF?

With the release of our iced chocolate frappe blitzers, we thought we'd talk about what chocolate frappes are made of. If you're buying one from a coffee shop or making it in your own home, the ingredients can vary, so please keep this in mind. However, if you'd like to make a delicious chocolate frappe using the new Cocoba frappe blitzers, you'll find all the info you need right here on our blog.

WHAT’S A CHOCOLATE FRAPPE MADE OF?

Chocolate frappes only contain a few ingredients, although ones you buy in shops and coffee shops will contain some flavourings and oddities that you can skip when you’re making them at home. Chocolate frappes should include:

  • Chocolate - milk chocolate, dark or white the world’s your oyster here! Or try our iced chocolate frappe blitzers!
  • Coffee - usually coffee flavouring, but you can use real espresso
  • Milk - usually whole milk, but you can use plant-based milk too
  • Ice - ice cubes or crushed ice
  • The toppings of your choice

HOW TO MAKE A CHOCOLATE FRAPPE AT HOME

You don't need many ingredients, but some tasty toppings never hurt anyone (more on this in a moment). Here's the recipe for making a chocolate frappe using one of our new blitzers:

  • Grab a glass and fill it with ice cubes. You can also use crushed ice, or if you have a powerful blender, you can add the ice to the blender with the rest of the ingredients and give everything a whizz.
  • Next, pop 255ml of milk into the blender. We always recommend whole milk as it gives the best mouthfeel. It's what we use in all of our hot chocolate and frappes at the Cocoba Cafe. Alternatively, you can also use a plant-based milk. Oat milk gives the best results in this case.
  • Add the chocolate frappe blitzer to the blender - you could also add an espresso into the mix for even more flavour.
  • Blend for 45-60 seconds depending on how powerful your blender is.
  • You can now pour the frappe into the glass with the ice. Or, for an extra treat, drip chocolate sauce around the inside of the glass and then pour the frappe in.

Now, you could enjoy your frappe just like this. Our blitzers are designed to be super tasty just by adding milk and blending. But to make it even more of a special treat, you need to add toppings!

THE BEST TOPPINGS TO ADD TO A CHOCOLATE FRAPPE

There are so many amazing toppings for frappes, so anything you choose will be delightful. From finely ground or chopped nuts to chocolate flakes, even a cheeky bit of vanilla extract - there's loads of ways of making a frappe even more tasty than it already is! However, in our opinion, there are some staples that shouldn't be ignored.

We've already mentioned chocolate syrup, of course. Adding this into your glass just before you pour the frappe in gives your chocolate frappe a rather professional feel. If you need some practice, or you've forgotten to do this, don't worry. Topping your whipped cream off with some chocolate syrup will still provide a little bit of extra sugar and sweetness to your drinks.

We love using our hot chocolate flakes to finish off the perfect frappe. However, if you've already enjoyed all your Cocoba hot chocolate, no need to panic. Some mini chocolate chips will never not be a great addition to a frappe. If you want to tone down the sweetness a bit, dark chocolate chips can be used!

Whipped cream is the hero of this story! Adding whipped cream to anything always makes it better. The smooth texture, the slight sweetness and the mouth-watering taste make whipped cream a must-have on frappes. You can also buy vegan whipped cream too, so everyone can enjoy a serving or two!

CHOCOLATE FRAPPE FAQS

HOW CAN I ADJUST THE SWEETNESS LEVEL OF A CHOCOLATE FRAPPE?

You have some options if you want to adjust the sweetness level of your frappe. If you want to go extra sweet, you could add whipped cream or more chocolate syrup, for example. To take some sweetness away, if it’s too rich, adding a different flavour will help. Try adding salted caramel. The natural flavouring of the salt will take some of the sweetness away. You could also replace the chocolate syrup with dark chocolate syrup for a slightly less sweet option or remove it from the recipe altogether.

ARE THERE ANY VARIATIONS TO THE TRADITIONAL CHOCOLATE FRAPPE RECIPE?

There's an impressive amount of variations to the traditional frappe. These recipes rely on the fact that chocolate goes with so many things! You could add some cherries as a topping for a black forest gateau vibe or drizzle with strawberry syrup and garnish with chopped nuts for a knickerbocker glory.

CAN I MAKE A DAIRY-FREE OR VEGAN VERSION OF A CHOCOLATE FRAPPE?

At the moment, our iced chocolate frappe blitzers are not dairy-free or vegan. However, there is a way of creating your own vegan version. All you need is some of our signature hot chocolate shavings, oat milk, a shot of espresso and the toppings of your choice (don't forget the vegan whipped cream)! Grab some ice and pop everything in the blender (other than the vegan cream) and you have your very own vegan frappe that's also free from trans fat!
