The Best Chocolate Milkshake Recipe Ever!

Chocolate milkshakes are always a firm favourite in any household, and this chocolate shake is certainly going to make the whole family happy! It's a great recipe to do with the kids, and in no time at all, you'll be enjoying some of the finest shakes you've ever tasted! Here's how to do it:

The ingredients you'll need:

  • 4 to 5 tablespoons of our delicious hot chocolate flakes
  • 2 tablespoons of boiling water
  • 2 scoops of Vanilla ice cream (or your favourite vegan vanilla ice cream)
  • 1 cup of milk (we'd recommend whole milk, or oat or almond milk if you're going for a vegan chocolate milkshake)
  • 1 and a half cups of Ice

Optional toppings:

Equipment you'll need

  • An ice cream scoop
  • Blender (don't worry, we have a recipe below that doesn't need a blender)
  • Tablespoon
  • Mixing mug
  • Cold glass for serving (pop it in the freezer for half an hour)

The Method

Making a mouth-watering chocolate paste

To start with, we need to make the chocolate sauce. For this, you'll need 4 or 5 tablespoons of our hot chocolate flakes. You’re really spoilt for choice here! Our milk chocolate drinking flakes offer an indulgent mouthfeel and delicate sweetness. Our white chocolate flakes have a beautiful sweet taste and work amazingly in a strawberry and cream-style milkshake. You could opt for our salted caramel chocolate flakes which have a slightly salty, slightly sweet flavour profile. Or, if you're vegan choose our signature chocolate flakes - they are 55% dark chocolate and 100% tasty.

Whichever chocolate flakes you choose, you're in for a treat, and here's how to turn them into a chocolate paste:

Place 4 to 5 tablespoons of our flakes in a mug and add two tablespoons of boiling water. Stir until you make a thick chocolatey paste. Set this aside and grab the blender - it's time to make the shake.

The shake

In your blender, combine ice cream and milk. We've opted for vanilla ice cream here, but you can use chocolate ice cream for an even more chocolatey taste. Then add your ice cubes. Remember, the more ice you add, the thicker the shake will be. Now add the chocolate paste and blend.

You only need to blend the milkshake for about 30 seconds to a minute. Just make sure all the ingredients are combined and that it is nice and thick, we aren't trying to make chocolate milk here! If the mixture is looking thin, you can add more ice cream or ice. For a really thick shake, add a frozen banana and blend for a little while longer.

The toppings

Just before you serve, we need to make some chocolate sauce! It’s really easy, just add 4 to 5 scoops of our flakes to another glass or mug and add three or four tablespoons of boiling water to it. Give it a good stir until it reaches a thick and gooey consistency! Now we’re ready to build the best milkshake ever!

Grab your glass out of the freezer and pour your handmade chocolate sauce around the inside of the glass. Pour the milkshake into a cold glass and start adding your toppings. The optional whipped cream is a lovely addition, as is a tablespoon of chocolate flakes scattered over the top. You could also save some chocolate sauce for a final drizzle on top.

You can also add chopped nuts or marshmallows. You could even chop up some of our salted caramel buttons for the ultimate delicious topping. Or if you've used our white chocolate flakes, top with dried strawberries and drizzle with a strawberry sauce for a beautiful strawberries and cream shake!

As you can see, there are loads of ways to finish off your thick chocolate milkshake, and our mouths are watering already! If you have a favourite topping, let us know on Instagram or Facebook!

How to make a chocolate milkshake without a blender

If you don't have a blender, don't worry, you won't miss out on the fun! You can still enjoy a delicious milkshake, it just requires a bit more elbow grease!

The first step is to make your chocolate paste using the method above. But this time, make it in a mason jar, this will be important later. While it's warm, add your ice cream and watch as it starts to melt. You'll want ice cream to soften a little bit, but not too much because we want a thicker shake. For a thinner shake, you can let the ice cream melt as much as you like. If the ice cream isn’t melting enough you can pop it in the microwave for a few seconds.

Now add milk. Again, you can use plant-based milk or whole milk, just make sure it is cold milk. You'll need crushed ice if you have it. If you don't, you can crush your own by wrapping the bag of ice in a tea towel and giving it a bash with a rolling pin.

Now pop the lid on the mason jar and give it a good shake until everything looks chocolatey and delicious. For a thicker milkshake, you can add more ice cream, for a thinner shake, add some more milk.

Serve immediately in the mason jar or a cold glass and with your choice of tasty toppings!
